Cabaret follows American writer Cliff who has moved to Berlin Germany and his life there as he meets the illustrious Sally Bowles. As Cliff’s time there increases, so does the rise of the Nazi party and we watch as the characters struggle with their questionable morality. Cabaret is a warning, a reflection of ourselves and what we are doing and what the consequences of our actions will be, whether we choose to act out, or stay silent. This show is a reflection of America today. We meet characters that we empathize and connect with. Throughout the story, we see their struggles to grasp what is going on and how they fail to act against injustice. We see that through the character’s complacency, they contribute to the Nazi cause even if they morally are against it. I wanted to highlight the characters in the show using lighting and circles to focus on their character. The circles are a representation of how history is cyclical and will repeat itself if we don't take the proper measures to stop devastating events from happening.
"There was a cabaret and there was a master of ceremonies and there was a city called Berlin in a country called Germany. It was the end of the world. And I was dancing with Sally Bowles and we were both fast asleep." - Cliff
